The Society was founded in 1949 by Jack Cogan who was Music Master at Braintree High School and Choirmaster and Organist at St Peter’s Church. A Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiast, the first stage production was The Pirates of Penzance in 1951 which he produced, musically directed and conducted.
BMS has produced a wide variety of challenging musicals – our 100th show ‘Anything Goes’ was performed in October 2007 at the Braintree Institute.
We have since performed many shows at Braintree Arts Theatre and our most recent production in 2019 which was The Sound Of Music and Old Tyme Music Hall, a concert that brought back some memories of the good ‘ole days which was thoroughly enjoyed by younger and older members of the audience.
With the unprecedented times we were unable to perform any shows in 2020 but we can not wait to come back bigger and more entertaining than before and we can not wait to see those smiles from the stage!
In addition, from time to time, the society have hosted many events such as Barn Dances, Curryokes, Bingo parties and have entered entered in the carnival procession and so much more. Over the years, many of those involved have been whole families and indeed a number of a second generation have followed in their parents’ footsteps.
